About the Role
The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) will be responsible for providing professional, evidence-based client-centered care for individuals including all aspects of client and family care in accordance with the Regulated Health Professionals Act and College of Nurses Ontario Standards.
The RPN will be holistic, careful, and ethical in interactions with clients, families, and colleagues, and make sound judgments based on experience and knowledge. The RPN will work in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. They will provide care and be part of a care delivery team with the Registered Nurse (RN), Personal Support Worker (PSW) and any volunteers assigned. The RPN will complete admission assessments and care-planning across the domains of physical and psychosocial care, lead and provide client care, use critical thinking skills to recognize when to use validated assessment tools.
The RPN will liaise with the Physician/Nurse Practitioner and other Health Care Workers to support the client and family. The designated nursing authority is the Registered Nurse (RN) as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario Three Factor Framework which will be utilized to match the nursing category with the client needs. The framework involves the consideration of three factors of equal importance: the client, the nurse and the environment, and deliberating on how they apply to the situation. Directly reports to Manager, Client & Staff Services, you will also need to maintain and complete data collection and reporting as needed to support the team to fulfill the clients’ service goals.Â
The Registered Practical Nurse (RN) will work with variety of partners and client/caregivers and maintain timely and transparent communication with them to create a clear understanding of all timelines, activities, and outcomes.Â
QualificationÂ
Education: Completion of a recognized a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree offered by a university, college, Indigenous institute, or through a college-university partnership.Â
Training Program: Need to have completed a formal training program that covers personal care, assisting with daily living activities, communication skills, infection control, and basic healthcare procedures. It may also include both classroom instruction and hands-on practical experience, through clinical placement.Â
Certification: Need to have obtained a certification or licensure, that the individual has completed the required training and meets the standards set by relevant health authorities such as the national registration examination and be registered in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.Â
First Aid and CPR Certification: Required to hold valid Advance First Aid and CPR certification.Â
Criminal Record Check: Require having a criminal record check to ensure the safety and well-being of the individuals they will be caring for.Â
Communication Skills: Strong communication skills to effectively interact with clients, their families, coworkers, and other healthcare professionals.Â
Compassion and Empathy: Because RNs work closely with individuals who may be vulnerable, having a compassionate and empathetic nature is crucial.Â
Physical Fitness: The job of a RPN involves some physical tasks, such as assisting individuals in performing RPN duties.Â
